Empowering women through circularity
and entrepreneurship

THINA AND MAMAS.jpg

Imagine: a struggling single mom who can now send her children to school with full stomachs. A granny who sheds tears at her grandson’s graduation, after she put him through university. A sole breadwinner who once lived in a cramped shack, but who now is able to build a home of her own.

These are some of the dreams that have been made possible by the Invest in Dignity® Foundation

This non-profit organisation is empowering women from disadvantaged communities in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province to earn decent livelihoods and be part of a sisterhood of sustainability through a recycling program.

Tapping into the green economy

We are hungry to do even more – and the possibilities are endless. Oxford Economics estimates that by 2050, the global green economy will be worth up to $10- trillion – a sizable and growing sector, and one that cannot be ignored.

South Africa’s green industry sector is still in its relative infancy, with only 10% of waste being recycled or recovered every year – a shockingly low statistic. This means the rest goes to landfills or is dumped illegally. It’s clear: we urgently need to lessen the risk to the environment and to our people, who have the right to live in clean, safe, unpolluted neighbourhoods. The economic opportunities in the green economy are plain to see – it just takes will and commitment.

Our dream is that the ripples created through our small-scale recycling projects will eventually broaden into bigger waves of impact, self-sufficiency and economic activity. And witnessing the Mamas’ uplifting stories of hope, healing and belonging first-hand proves change is possible – all we have to do is take the first steps and let the momentum build.

Other women should try it -they will see.” –
